WORCESTER, Mass., May 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Citizens and
Hanover Insurance Companies today announced that Alan Crater has been named
regional president of their downstate New York and New Jersey commercial lines
divisions, effective immediately.
"As regional vice president, Alan will help us bring greater focus to and
a better understanding of these key markets," said Frederick H. Eppinger,
president and chief executive officer of Allmerica Financial Corporation
(NYSE: AFC), the parent company to Citizens and Hanover. "I know that Alan

Crater comes to Allmerica from The St. Paul Companies, and brings more
than 30 years of experience and industry knowledge to his new position. Most
recently, he served as president of St. Paul's Northeast region, where he was
responsible for agency management, distribution of specialty and commercial
products, commercial lines operations and overall business development.
Before joining St. Paul, Alan was senior vice president of CIGNA Property
and Casualty's inland marine division from 1998 to 1999. In this position, he
directed and managed the strategic growth and development of 13 field offices
for the company's inland marine unit.
From 1992 to 1998, Alan served as vice president of USF&G Corporation's
property, inland marine and underwriting operations within the company's
commercial insurance group.
Prior to joining USF&G, Alan held senior management positions at both the
Atlantic Mutual Companies (1986-1992) and the Chubb Group of Insurance
Companies (1982-1986).
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Alan also is a
Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter, CPCU, and an Associate in Marine
Insurance Management, AMIM.
