WORCESTER, Mass., May 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Champion catcher Jason Varitek is encouraging young fans to read this summer through his support of the Massachusetts Teachers Association's Red Sox Summer Reading Game, presented by The Hanover Insurance Group Foundation, Inc. Participants have a chance to win one of 100 sets of tickets to a Red Sox game, where they will be invited onto the field to celebrate with Wally the Green Monster.

"Literacy skills are important building blocks for success in life," said Varitek. "A child who learns to love books can become anything – a teacher, a doctor, a baker or a professional baseball player.

"Reading is the key to reaching your dreams," he added.

Playing is Simple

Submit an entry form pledging to read nine books—one for each position on the baseball field. That is all a student has to do! Each K-8 student who sends in a pledge form will be entered in a drawing to win free tickets to a Red Sox game. Entry forms are sent to public schools throughout the state and are also available at www.readingmatters.org.

"Studies clearly show that children who continue to read during the summer months perform better when they return to school in the fall," said MTA President Paul Toner. "Our partnership with the Red Sox and The Hanover Foundation helps us teach children that reading is both important and fun."

"Our company and our employees are proud to support the MTA Red Sox Summer Reading Game for the fourth consecutive year," said Jennifer Luisa, assistant vice president, corporate community relations, for The Hanover Insurance Group. "This program fits well with our foundation's mission—to support a wide range of needs in our home communities, with a special emphasis on the issues of education and youth."
