Designed to encourage essay-writing, the Most Valuable Educator program invites students in grades nine through twelve to nominateteachers, librarians, coaches, and even school volunteers for special recognition. Winning educators are selected from all nominations and are invited to participate in a pre-game recognition ceremony at Fenway Park during the summer. The winning educators and the students who nominate them receive a pair of tickets for a Red Sox Game.
To kick off the program, The Hanover is sponsoring visits by Matt Tavaras, acclaimed children's author and illustrator, on May 11th, to speak with students from the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at South High School and Burncoat Senior High School in Worcester. AVID is a college readiness system for elementary through postsecondary students that is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance.
Tavaras will share with the students the inspiring story of his journey to becoming an author and illustrator. His has published more than a dozen books, including There Goes Ted Williams: The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived, which he will read at the events.
"A critical piece of our mission is to help youth realize their full potential," said Jennifer Luisa, assistant vice president, community relations at The Hanover. "Quality educators, administrators and volunteers are important to making our vision a reality and we are excited to help in honoring them, once again. At the same time, we are very pleased to encourage students to be proactive and exercise their writing skills to recognize someone who has made a difference in their lives."
